Egyptian Expert: The US is Putting Europe in a Secondary Position in Global Security
Sputnik News, Cairo - Egyptian professor of political science and international relations Tarek Fahmi told Sputnik that European countries are aware that the US is diminishing their importance in global security issues, referring to negotiations on nuclear weapons and the future of NATO.
On February 9, the U.S. ambassador to NATO, Matthew Pottinger, stated that the U.S. plans to leave Europe with only a "nuclear umbrella" in the future. Meanwhile, conventional defense on the European continent should be the responsibility of European countries. He compared Washington's European allies to children who should no longer rely on their parents - the United States. Additionally, he called on "very wealthy" European countries to take on the costs of conventional defense.
Fahmi said: "There is significant exaggeration in the media reports about this issue, suggesting that Europe may adopt a different approach from the U.S., but this will not happen. Europe feels that it is being placed in a secondary position by the U.S.: there used to be a 'trio' of Europe (France, Britain, and Germany) in nuclear negotiations, but now these three countries are not involved in the talks."
