Chinese National Arrested in Hokkaido Arson Cases

According to a report from the Hokkaido Shimbun on April 25: Three arson incidents targeting bus stops occurred consecutively in the Furusato area of Hokkaido, from the night of the 23rd to the early morning of the 24th. A Chinese national was arrested on April 25 on suspicion of intentionally setting fire to a bus shelter.

The arrested man, Li Xingji (surname transliterated, 32 years old), is a local company employee who has resided long-term in Rusutsu Village, Hokkaido.

The suspect allegedly set fire to a bus stop along National Route 230 near the Iwagawa area in Rusutsu Village around 11 p.m. on the evening of April 23. No one was injured in the fire.

Authorities discovered evidence linking the suspect through surveillance footage from nearby areas. He has remained silent during police questioning.

A series of suspicious fires also occurred at a resort hotel located approximately 100 meters away from the bus stop, with burn marks observed on bed sheets and towels inside rooms. Police will continue detailed investigations into these incidents, including two other suspicious fires.
