Chinese couple arrested for fraudulently obtaining "pandemic subsidy"
According to the local Hokkaido media "Hokkaido Shimbun" on February 3: A Chinese couple living in Sapporo City was arrested for fraudulently obtaining approximately 3.34 million yen (about 150,000 RMB) in pandemic "rental payment subsidy".
The two are a 54-year-old male company operator and a 53-year-old female employee, who live in the Kita-ku district of Sapporo City, both are Chinese citizens.
They did not meet the eligibility criteria for the subsidy, but falsely claimed to be within the scope of the government's "support welfare office" benefits from August 25, 2020, to December 21, 2020.
"Rental support benefit" is a subsidy system for damaged businesses due to the pandemic, which provides rent subsidies.
The police obtained information related to this case in May 2024 and began an investigation.
On February 3, with sufficient evidence, the two were arrested on suspicion of fraud.
The man runs a company in Hokkaido that sells hotel supplies and skincare products (deer oil), and the woman is an employee of the company.
The police are also investigating the specific use of the fraudulent subsidy and other criminal activities.
