Six U.S. Auto Industry Associations Write Joint Letter to Trump: Block Chinese Automakers
The mere statement by Trump that “he might allow Chinese automakers to establish factories in the United States” has sent shockwaves through the American automotive sector.
On the 18th, six industry groups—including the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, the Automotive Policy Council, and the Auto Drive America Association—sent a joint letter to the White House, explicitly calling on the Trump administration to prohibit Chinese automakers from building factories or selling vehicles in the United States.
Unsurprisingly, to amplify the perceived threat posed by Chinese automakers, the letter advanced several arguments bordering on the irrational, such as the claim that Chinese companies “would not generate new employment opportunities in the United States.”
It is difficult not to find irony in the fact that the U.S. auto industry reacted with alarm over a single offhand remark by Trump—especially given that, due to discriminatory government policies, Chinese vehicles are already effectively barred from entering the U.S. market, and even automotive components have long been excluded.
Yet despite this reality, the industry continues to react with disproportionate anxiety, revealing just how fragile its confidence is in competing with Chinese automakers.
