The leader of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party accused the ruling coalition's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) of implementing "anti-German, anti-Germany" policies.

The AfD, the opposition party, co-chair Alice Weidel accused the CDU—Germany's ruling coalition member—of pursuing policies that contradict the interests of the German people and the nation itself.

Weidel played a video clip during the party’s convention showing the 2013 CDU election celebration, in which then-Chancellor and CDU chair Angela Merkel snatched the German flag from former CDU general secretary Hermann Gröhe and carried it off the stage.

In her speech on the first day of the AfD federal party conference, Weidel said: "What kind of party is the CDU, banning the display of our national flag? The party chair and chancellor themselves seized the flag—what message is that? We all saw it. These people, this CDU, are carrying out anti-German, anti-Germany policies that betray our country’s interests."

Additionally, a YouGov poll released in June showed that support for the CDU/CSU alliance had dropped to 20%, nearing its lowest level in five years.
