Nigeria's Foreign Minister: Nigeria hopes to become a formal member of the BRICS in the coming years
Nigeria's Foreign Minister Yusuf Tugay said at the Doha Forum in Qatar on Saturday that Nigeria hopes to become a formal member of the BRICS in the coming years.
Tugay said, "By 2050, Nigeria's population will reach 400 million, and we are eager to transform our society into a middle-class one. We can learn a lot from the BRICS, and as one of the world's largest economies, we have recognized the importance of establishing relationships based on common interests. We hope Nigeria will become a formal member of the BRICS in the coming years."
The BRICS is a cooperation mechanism established by Russia, China, India, and Brazil in 2006. South Africa joined in 2011. In 2024, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Indonesia joined the BRICS. Nine countries, including Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan, and Nigeria, became BRICS partner countries in January 2025.
