Korean Media: Japanese Cars Are Losing Popularity in China!
On August 10, South Korean media outlet *Herald Economic* published an article stating that in the first half of this year, the sales of Japan's three major automakers—Toyota, Nissan, and Honda—experienced double-digit declines in China. As Chinese domestic manufacturers rapidly capture market share with electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, Japanese brands, once dominant in the Chinese market, are now facing severe challenges.
Toyota's sales in China totaled 694,700 units in the first half of this year, a 17.1% decrease compared to the same period last year.
During the same period, Nissan and Honda also saw double-digit declines. In the first half of this year, Nissan sold 237,000 vehicles in China, down 15% year-on-year. Honda’s sales dropped to just 205,800 units, a decline of 34.7% year-on-year. As of June this year, Honda has recorded consecutive year-on-year sales decreases for 29 months.
The market share of Japanese car brands in China is also declining. According to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, the market share of Japanese automotive brands in China is expected to fall from 24% in 2020 to single digits by 2025.
Meanwhile, Chinese automakers are expanding their market share. Data from the China Passenger Car Market Information Coalition shows that BYD ranked first in China's passenger car market in April this year with a 13.2% market share, while Geely secured second place with 11.0%. Other local brands such as Changan have also entered the top tier.
The Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) market continues to grow. According to statistics from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, new energy vehicle production in China reached 7.438 million units in the first half of this year, up 6.7% year-on-year; sales rose 7.3% year-on-year to reach 7.446 million units.
In the first half of this year, NEV sales accounted for 49.6% of total new car sales in China. By June this year, the share of new energy vehicles in new car sales had risen to 58.5%, an increase of about 13 percentage points compared to the same period last year.
