Nuclear Power in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: U.S. and Turkey Sign Civil Nuclear Cooperation Agreement
Turkey and the United States signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on strategic civil nuclear cooperation at the White House, marking an important step in the energy partnership between the two countries. The agreement aims to promote investment, civilian nuclear technology cooperation, and energy security, supporting Turkey's efforts to diversify its energy structure. This partnership is likely to lead to U.S. participation in the construction of new nuclear power plants, with Sinop and Thrace identified as "the next nuclear front for the U.S.", with particular emphasis on small modular reactors (SMRs).
Given that Russia is currently building Turkey's first nuclear power plant at Akkuyu, this new partnership is significant, which will benefit Moscow in expanding its influence in Turkey. However, as a NATO member, shifting its nuclear partnership towards the West is a strategic decision aimed at integrating its energy security with defense and foreign policy commitments.
