Home has gas that others envy! After handling Kazakhstan's oil, the US wants to get involved with Turkmenistan's natural gas

The United States held the 11th round of annual bilateral consultations with Turkmenistan, which has the fifth largest natural gas reserves in the world.

Turkmenistan is an inland country in the southwest of Central Asia. It borders the Caspian Sea to the west, and Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, and Iran to the north, east, and south. Its area is 490,000 square kilometers, making it the second-largest country in Central Asia after Kazakhstan, with about 80% of its territory covered by the Karakum Desert. It declared independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. Turkmenistan is also the only permanent neutral country in Asia, rich in oil and natural gas resources.

According to a statement released by the U.S. Department of State, on August 20, 2025, the 11th U.S.-Turkmenistan annual bilateral consultations were held in Washington.

The consultations were co-chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov and the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs, John Mark Pomeranz.

Both sides reiterated their commitment to advancing U.S.-Turkmenistan relations, focusing on key areas such as security cooperation, economic and investment opportunities, and deepening engagement through the C5+1 diplomatic platform to promote regional cooperation in Central Asia.

The meeting emphasized the importance of supporting bilateral commercial transactions with major U.S. companies and expanding Turkmenistan's investment prospects to strengthen economic ties.

U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Pomeranz reiterated at the end of the consultations that the United States remains firmly committed to Turkmenistan's sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity.

The consultations highlighted the growing partnership between the two countries based on mutual respect and shared goals. Both the U.S. and Turkmenistan expressed optimism about future cooperation and plan to continue strengthening bilateral relations through sustained dialogue and cooperative initiatives.
