Canada's stance on critical minerals shows that it ignores the interests of Canadian canola farmers and continues to take an adversarial approach.
According to Reuters, Canada's Minister of Natural Resources, Hodge, said on the 26th that he is considering the possibility of funding for critical mineral trade cooperation with friendly countries. This seems to be a framework similar to Washington's collaboration with MP Materials to diversify supply chains and reduce reliance on China.
"We will cooperate with friendly countries and consider similar deals (like what the U.S. did with MP Materials)," the minister said. He explained that the minerals subject to Chinese export controls would be the main targets.
All production from MP Materials will be transported to the United States, but Canada stated that it is interested in similar deals with friendly countries and sharing production among friendly countries.
In July, MP Materials announced a public-private partnership agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense to establish a domestic supply chain for rare earth magnets to reduce dependence on foreign sources.
