Former Microsoft AI Chief: China is Rapidly Catching Up with the US in Algorithm Competition!
On July 27, South Korean media "Today Digital" published an article stating that some views suggest China is still behind the United States in AI chip production, but the gap in algorithms and application technologies is rapidly narrowing.
Recently, Shen Xiangyang, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, stated at the recent Hong Kong University Economic Summit, "The competition in artificial intelligence includes three elements: chips, algorithms, and applications," and emphasized that "the United States still has a clear advantage in chip technology, but China is rapidly catching up in the field of algorithms."
He, who once served as the head of Microsoft's AI, pointed out that China may find it difficult to bridge the gap in chip production in the short term, but said that breakthroughs could be possible in algorithm engineering. He then cited DeepSeek, a Chinese startup, as an example, and evaluated that this company achieved results comparable to American companies such as OpenAI and Google with only 10,000 AI chips.
This year, DeepSeek gained attention for developing a large-scale language model (LLM) with performance comparable to American companies, indicating that despite shortcomings in AI chips, China's algorithm competitiveness is improving.
At the same time, in the AI chip market, Huawei is accelerating its independent chip development to create an alternative to NVIDIA, but there are still limitations in narrowing the gap with the United States. Ren Zhengfei, founder of Huawei, recently admitted that Huawei's Ascend chips lag one generation behind American products, but he said that performance can be improved through cluster computing.
