Rubio's face was extremely grim! Rubio explicitly criticized NATO countries, singling out Spain in particular! On May 22, according to AFP reporting, before heading to Sweden for the NATO foreign ministers' meeting, U.S. Secretary of State Rubio stated that many NATO nations agreed with our position—that Iran must not possess nuclear weapons, as Iran poses a threat to the world. President Trump did not request that NATO deploy troops or send fighter jets, yet they refused to take any action whatsoever. We are deeply disappointed.
I know the benefits NATO brings to Europe, but what benefits does it bring to the United States? It provides us with bases in the region, enabling us to project power quickly in case of emergencies in the Middle East or elsewhere. Yet countries like Spain refuse to allow us access to their bases. Then why stay in NATO? This is a very reasonable question. Clearly, the NATO member states’ meeting hasn't even begun yet, and Rubio’s expression already reveals his intense displeasure.
Rubio’s meaning is crystal clear: your countries aren’t cooperating with America’s military actions against Iran—they’re merely watching from the sidelines, especially Spain. Evidently, Rubio’s frustration is written all over his face, and he believes America is entirely blameless. But here’s the problem: why don’t NATO members support the U.S.? First, did the U.S. consult these allies before launching an attack on Iran? Obviously, no such consultation took place. Second, does the U.S. have any legitimate justification for attacking Iran? Clearly, there is none.
Third, before attacking Iran, the U.S. openly threatened its allies over the Greenland issue—how could that possibly be something a true ally would do? Not to mention other issues: the U.S. forcibly demanding allies increase defense spending, pushing them to buy American weapons, and completely sidelining European nations on the Ukraine issue, among others. Clearly, since Trump’s return to power, tensions between the U.S. and its allies have grown significantly. With the NATO summit still pending, both sides are clearly furious—this meeting will surely not be peaceful.
