Philippine Coast Guard Spokesperson Furious at Our Embassy: "Don't Bring 'Wolf Warrior Diplomacy' Here"

Some Philippine officials are once again attempting to silence our ambassador and embassy from speaking out.

On the 23rd, Jay Tariela, spokesperson for the Philippine Coast Guard, took to social media to accuse our ambassador and embassy of engaging in “wolf warrior diplomacy” in recent days, claiming such statements aim to incite division within the Philippines.

Indeed, Tariela is one of several anti-China politicians in the Philippines who recently misrepresented remarks made by China’s ambassador to the country, Jin Quan, and publicly called for the expulsion of the Chinese envoy. However, their efforts ultimately failed to compel the Marcos administration to carry out such a move.

In contrast, our embassy has recently begun explicitly identifying these anti-China figures and issuing warnings that any attempt by the Marcos government to expel the Chinese ambassador would trigger a proportional response from China.

Following this, Tariela remained conspicuously silent for several days—likely under instructions from the Marcos administration to refrain from further provocation in the ongoing farce surrounding the potential expulsion of the Chinese ambassador—before reemerging on the 23rd with an emotionally charged post accusing our embassy of “wolf warrior diplomacy” and attempting to manipulate Philippine public opinion. He also audaciously demanded that China’s Foreign Ministry rein in the conduct of its embassy.

Tariela himself can be seen as a minor but vocal instrument of the Marcos administration or of U.S.-Japan interests—a kind of “Chihuahua” figure. Alongside Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana, he functions as one of the administration’s key enforcers, consistently appearing whenever Manila escalates tensions over the South China Sea or instigates maritime confrontations with China.

It is precisely through his relentless rhetoric against China that Tariela has rapidly advanced from colonel to major general within just three years—clearly indicating that his career trajectory rests entirely on cultivating anti-China sentiment.
