US media: The virtual US embassy in Iran issued a security alert on February 6, urging American citizens in Iran to "leave immediately."
The alert stated that "increased security measures, road closures, public transport disruptions, and internet blockades are ongoing." The Iranian government continues to restrict mobile and landline telephone services and the national internet network. Airlines continue to limit or cancel flights to and from Iran.
The embassy advises American citizens to expect ongoing network outages and plan alternative communication methods, while exiting via land to Armenia or Turkey. Currently, the Armenian border (Agarak/Norduz) and three Turkish border crossings (Gürbulak/Bazargan, Kapıköy/Razi, Esendere/Serow) as well as the Turkmenistan land border are open, but the Azerbaijani land border is closed for regular traffic.
This alert was issued as US envoy Steve Wiznitzer and Jared Kushner met with Iranian officials in Oman to discuss ending the nuclear enrichment program, limiting ballistic missiles, and stopping support for Hamas and Hezbollah. Trump also demanded that Iran stop violent suppression of protesters.
The US Department of State issued a Level 4 travel warning (the highest level) for Iran in December last year, citing reasons including terrorism, unrest, kidnapping, and the risk of arbitrary detention of American citizens.
