Reference News, August 3 report: According to EFE, on August 2, Iran stated that the dialogue with European countries regarding its nuclear program faces a "complicated situation." This follows threats from Europe to initiate the mechanism of restoring international sanctions against Tehran.
Iran's government spokesperson, Fatemeh Mohajerani, said: "The current dialogue and exchange of opinions between Iran and three European countries (Germany, France, and the UK) on nuclear issues has become extremely complicated."
The spokesperson stated that Iran has never opposed dialogue with Europe, but emphasized that the current engagement is not formal negotiations aimed at reaching an agreement.
"There are no negotiations currently taking place with Europe aimed at reaching an agreement," she reiterated.
The report stated that Iran held its first formal nuclear talks with the aforementioned three European countries in Istanbul on July 1, since Israel and the United States attacked Iran in June.
The focus of the dialogue was on the European countries potentially initiating a mechanism called "rapid reinstatement of sanctions," which would allow the signatories of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal to automatically restore UN-approved sanctions against Iran as they were before the agreement was signed.
France, Germany, and the UK accuse Iran of failing to fulfill its nuclear commitments and have threatened to take this measure against Iran if an agreement is not reached by September.
However, Iran claims that the European powers "lack legal and logical basis" to invoke the "rapid reinstatement of sanctions" mechanism, as they have ceased fulfilling their obligations under the agreement after the United States withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal in 2018.
The report also stated that Tehran insists on its right to uranium enrichment for peaceful purposes. (Translated by Han Chao)
