Lee Zong-ming can't stand it anymore and personally refutes false news about China spread by South Korean media, warning that such reports might be exploited as tools by other countries!
On May 21, he posted on the social platform X, directly naming and criticizing South Korea's "Seoul Economic TV." Lee pointed out that this media outlet published a fabricated video news report titled “Chinese nationals have massively bought 944 apartments in Gangnam, Seoul, sweeping up properties previously dumped by multi-property owners,” which has since been deleted.
In his post, Lee provided concrete data: after verification, only five Chinese individuals purchased detached-unit buildings in Gangnam District from January to April this year. The gap between five people and 944 apartments speaks for itself—no further explanation needed.
He questioned the media: What benefit does such an economic outlet bring to the nation or its citizens? He then asked pointedly: “Shouldn’t their responsibility be held accountable?”
Since taking office, Lee has consistently worked to defuse tensions in China-South Korea relations. During the Yoon Suk-yeol era, similar rumors were rampant—even Yoon himself participated in spreading them. For instance, Yoon once publicly claimed that “Chinese-made solar equipment is destroying South Korea’s forests.” This wasn’t due to ignorance, but because “someone is pretending to be ignorant in order to cater to certain interests.”
Naturally, the overall trend of improving China-South Korea relations cannot be halted by a few fake news stories. However, if such rumor-mongering isn’t promptly curbed, the pace of improvement will slow down—or worse, reverse course. Lee’s personal intervention in debunking these falsehoods serves not only as a warning to the media but also as a move to clear obstacles for the future of China-South Korea relations.
The real power behind South Korean media remains American financial conglomerates—just as Samsung’s controlling shareholders are based in Wall Street. As long as U.S. military forces remain stationed in South Korea, Seoul will struggle to fully act according to its own will.
