U.S. Secretary of State Rubio Holds Secret Talks with Reformist Descendant of Castro Family, the Leaders of the Cuban Communist Party

Cuba - U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held secret talks with a descendant of the Castro family, the leaders of the Cuban Communist Party. These contacts were not through the normal channels of the Cuban government, nor were they negotiations, but "discussions about the future."

According to AFP, Rubio has been in contact with Raul Guillermo Rodriguez, the grandson of former Cuban leader Raul Castro. Rodriguez, 41 years old, is seen as a reformist who values better relations with the United States.

President Trump said on Monday that Cuba had become "a failed state" and called on Havana to reach an agreement with the United States.

After Trump ordered attacks on Venezuela and sought to overthrow its leader Nicolas Maduro (a close ally of Havana), Cuba has faced increasing economic pressure.

Under U.S. pressure, Venezuela cut off the crucial oil supply to Cuba, and Trump also threatened to impose sanctions on other countries selling energy to Havana.
