Korean Media: BYD Surges Overseas, Sets New Records Again!
On October 11, South Korean media outlet Today's Finance published an article stating that BYD’s global sales continue to rise. Despite a decline in domestic market volume, strong overseas performance has driven the company’s new energy vehicle (NEV) total sales to a new high for the year.
In August, BYD sold 440,293 new energy vehicles globally—up 17.8% compared to 373,626 units in the same period last year and a 5.0% increase from 419,211 units in July—marking the highest monthly sales figure so far this year.
This marks the fourth consecutive month of year-on-year growth in monthly sales. Although early-year weakness in domestic demand led to a sharp drop in sales, recent recovery has sustained the upward trend.
Overseas sales have seen particularly significant growth. In August, BYD’s overseas NEV sales reached 189,466 units, up 134.5% compared to 80,813 units in the same month last year. This represents a 5.0% increase from the previous month’s 180,538 units, setting another record for overseas sales.
The share of overseas sales in total sales rose to 43.0%. Given that overseas growth has outpaced overall sales expansion, analysis indicates that BYD’s global market development is now a primary driver of its total sales performance.
Meanwhile, domestic sales in China totaled 250,827 units in August, down 14.3% from 292,813 units in the same period last year. While this reflects a 5.1% increase from 238,673 units in July, it remains below year-earlier levels.
As a result, the importance of overseas markets in BYD’s sales growth is becoming increasingly evident. Amid intensifying competition within China’s automotive sector, the company is accelerating its international channel expansion to strengthen its business structure and safeguard overall performance.
By model type, the share of pure electric vehicles (BEVs) continues to grow. In August, BEVs accounted for 59.1% of BYD’s passenger NEV sales, up from 53.7% in the same period last year. While both plug-in hybrid and BEV segments are expanding, BEV sales growth has been more pronounced recently.
Year-to-date figures further confirm the overseas growth trend. From January to August, BYD’s total NEV sales reached approximately 2.668 million units, with overseas sales accounting for around 1.162 million units—a year-on-year increase of 85.7%.
BYD’s global expansion aligns with broader trends in China’s auto industry. In August, China’s passenger vehicle exports reached 894,000 units, up 77.5% year-on-year. By contrast, domestic passenger vehicle sales declined by 23.7%. Exports of new energy vehicles—including both BEVs and plug-in hybrids—rose by as much as 154.7%.
BYD expects to further accelerate its overseas expansion. Recent market forecasts suggest the company aims to export more than 2.5 million vehicles by 2027.
