BYD’s “Sea Otter” model targeted at Japan to expand into other international markets
According to a report by Japanese automotive media Response on October 5, since the launch of BYD’s lightweight electric vehicle “RACCO (Sea Otter)” in the Japanese market, discussions have intensified. The company is reportedly planning to capitalize on initial momentum by expanding the “Sea Otter” to additional overseas markets.
The announcement was made during the “10,000th Vehicle Delivery Celebration” event held at BYD Auto Shonan, a dealership in Higashiura City, Kanagawa Prefecture. The news was subsequently reported by Nikkei News.
It is reported that BYD plans to begin sales of the “Sea Otter” first in Sri Lanka and Macau, with pre-orders already underway in Macau. A launch event for the model is scheduled in Sri Lanka on the 9th of this month.
The “Sea Otter” is a newly developed model specifically designed for the Japanese market according to Japan’s lightweight vehicle standards. The new expansion strategy aims to target other right-hand drive markets, particularly those similar to Japan’s regulatory and infrastructure environment.
According to Nikkei Economic News, two months after its launch, the “Sea Otter” has nearly reached 2,000 total orders. Additional test drive events are expected to be introduced to further boost sales.
Suzuki holds the largest share of Japan’s lightweight vehicle segment. It is preparing to launch a new lightweight electric model, the “e SKY,” which is likely to intensify competition in the compact EV category. Other competitors include Nissan’s “Sakura.”
