Although Trump has pledged a tough stance on crime, his administration has already cut more than 4,000 employees from federal law enforcement agencies. According to information from the U.S. Department of Justice, since fiscal year 2024, the FBI's workforce has decreased by over 7%, the DEA by approximately 6%, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) by around 14%, and the National Security Division within the DOJ responsible for intelligence and counterterrorism has seen a reduction of nearly 38%. The significant staff reductions, coupled with increased focus on immigration issues, have led to a contraction in routine operations. For instance, the number of drug trafficking cases prosecuted at the federal level last year dropped to its lowest level in over two decades, and this year’s numbers are expected to decline further. However, a spokesperson for the Department of Justice stated that last year’s employee buyout program allowed the agency to eliminate those who “were unwilling to actively and faithfully combat crime and protect the American people,” adding that “any claim suggesting these layoffs have weakened our ability to fight violent crime is not factual.”
