The Japan Air Self-Defense Force has started receiving the F-35B vertical/short takeoff and landing stealth fighter jets purchased from the United States. The first three F-35B aircraft arrived at the new Tanegashima base in southeastern Kyushu at the end of August, and the second batch of two aircraft is scheduled to fly to the Tanegashima base from the U.S. mainland by the end of this month. The third batch of three aircraft is planned to be stationed at the Tanegashima base in March 2026.
By the end of this month, the Japan Air Self-Defense Force will officially start the replacement and flight training of the F-35B aircraft at the Tanegashima base. Earlier, the head of the Kyushu Defense Bureau of the Japanese Ministry of Defense, Ito Kazumi, visited the Miyazaki Prefectural Government and met with the governor of the prefecture, Kawano Shunsuke, and submitted relevant documents, confirming that the Tanegashima base will start the F-35B replacement and training work by the end of October. The related training will be conducted in stages, including vertical/short takeoff and landing on land and the Izumo-class light aircraft carrier deck, as well as night training. Once the Maebashi base in the city of Shiibayama, Kagoshima Prefecture, is completed, some training sessions will be moved to that base.
