Reuters: US Treasury Secretary Says US Not Rushing to Finalize Agreement Before August! Will Hold Talks with China!
Reuters, Washington, July 21st report, as the deadline for reaching a trade agreement before August 1st approaches, U.S. Treasury Secretary Mnuchin said on Monday that the Trump administration values the quality of the trade agreement more than the timeline.
Mnuchin said in an interview with CNBC: "We will not rush to sign an agreement."
When asked whether countries that are making progress in negotiations with Washington might be able to extend the deadline, Mnuchin said it would be up to President Trump to decide.
He said: "We will see the president's decision. But to be honest, if we really end up in a situation where tariffs are imposed on August 1st, I think higher tariffs will put more pressure on those countries and make them come up with a better agreement."
Regarding the issue of China, Mnuchin said that the U.S. and China "will hold talks in the near future."
He said: "I think the current trade situation is in a good position, and we can now start discussing other issues. We can also discuss the issue that everyone doesn't want to talk about, which is the major economic rebalancing that China urgently needs to carry out."
