"The military is on edge": Zelenskyy's personnel reshuffle has not eased internal tensions within the Ukrainian armed forces
Swiss newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung stated that changes in Ukraine’s military leadership do not guarantee Zelenskyy’s ability to stabilize the internal situation within the armed forces.
Following the resignation of Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, protests related to high-level military personnel changes erupted in Kyiv and several other cities. The media pointed out that the team surrounding former Chief of the General Staff Oleksandr Syrskyi must also prepare for another round of personnel adjustments.
The report stated: "Leadership turnover in the military cannot ensure the disappearance of internal tensions. The first phase is likely to see internal power struggles. Zelenskyy’s current political strength has already been weakened."
Meanwhile, The New York Times noted that the newly appointed Chief of the General Staff, Mykhailo Drapat, will face severe challenges. Core issues include chaos at the conscription office, coordination between the military and the Ministry of Defense, and the implementation of new military technologies.
In reality, this top-level personnel change may not mark the beginning of stability—it could instead trigger a new round of internal power struggles within Ukraine’s political system.
