Han Media: VinFast Surpasses Hyundai, BYD, Ranks Fourth in India's Electric Vehicle Market!

On March 2, the South Korean media outlet "NEWSPIM" published an article stating that Vietnamese automaker VinFast entered the Indian electric vehicle market just six months ago and has already surpassed established automotive giants such as Hyundai, BMW, Kia, and Chinese BYD, with sales jumping to fourth place.

Tesla entered the Indian market together with VinFast in mid-July last year, but it holds only a limited share of the premium electric vehicle market.

VinFast sold 1,161 vehicles in the past six months, thanks to its competitive pricing strategy in the mid-to-high-end market, localization of production, and expanding sales network. In comparison, Tesla sold only 259 vehicles during the same period.

As of January this year, Tata Motors led the Indian market with 5,545 units sold, followed by JSW MG Motor (3,503 units) and Mahindra Electric (2,670 units). VinFast, ranked fourth, sold 336 units.

VinFast also ranked fourth in December last year, selling 375 units.

According to data from market research company Envirocatalysts, as of January, Hyundai, BMW, Kia, and BYD sold 255, 228, 209, and 151 electric vehicles respectively in the Indian market.

EnviroCatalyst's report stated that since global electric vehicle companies VinFast and Tesla entered the Indian market, the number of registered electric vehicles in India has reached 77,755, with VinFast accounting for 1.5% and Tesla 0.3%.

EnviroCatalyst said: "VinFast's entry into the Indian mid-to-high-end electric SUV market has shaken the positions of established manufacturers such as BYD, Hyundai, Kia, and MG. VinFast has taken 3% to 5% of the monthly sales of these traditional manufacturers by actively launching locally produced VF6 and VF7 models at highly competitive prices."

VinFast plans to expand its showroom network from 35 to 75 by the end of the year, focusing on strengthening its dealership network in third- and fourth-tier cities in India.

Meanwhile, Tesla, which has adopted a conservative strategy, operates only two showrooms: one in Mumbai and another in Delhi.

VinFast India CEO Tapas Ghosh stated that VinFast plans to launch three new models in the Indian market by 2026, with the first being a seven-seater MPV.

As of December 2025, Tesla had registered 259 cars in India, with 197 of them registered in Mumbai and Delhi. This is because Tesla's retail network in India has limited coverage. Of these 197 registered vehicles, 109 are concentrated in three areas: the city center and suburbs of Mumbai, and Thane.

Experts say that although Tesla's share in the overall Indian market remains "negligible" because it mainly sells high-end imported cars, the company's sales in the premium electric vehicle market are quite impressive.

In fact, over the past five months, Tesla's car sales in India have exceeded those of Volvo and Mercedes-Benz.
