Vladimir Putin Denies Seeking to Act as Mediator for Israel-Iran Conflict

(AFP, St. Petersburg, May 20th) Russian President Vladimir Putin said today that he had not sought to become a mediator between Iran and Israel but had merely proposed some ideas on how the two countries could resolve the escalating crisis.

Following Israeli airstrikes against Iran last week and subsequent retaliation by the latter with missiles and drones, the Kremlin has recently positioned itself as a potential peacemaker.

However, Western leaders have opposed Putin's involvement, and earlier this week Moscow also stated that Israel showed little interest in Russia's proposals.

Putin said today at an economic forum held in St. Petersburg, Russia: "We absolutely did not try to act as mediators; we have only put forward ideas. If these ideas are attractive to both sides, we will be very pleased."

Although Moscow condemned Israel's airstrikes, it has not provided military assistance to its ally Iran and has attempted to downplay Russia's obligations under the comprehensive strategic partnership agreement signed with Iran just months ago.

Israel has recently threatened to target Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei. When asked about this today, Putin replied: "I sincerely hope that what you mentioned is just talk."
