Zakharova mocks Western officials: Stop going to Kyiv for "vacations"
Maria Zakharova, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson: Western officials should stop going to Kyiv
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova suggested on July 16 (Thursday) that European Union Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and other Western representatives should no longer travel to Kyiv after reports emerged of the need to take shelter.
"Westerners should understand: the 'vacation' in Kyiv is over. There's no need to keep rushing there," Zakharova commented on the incident during an interview with Pravda Kommunista.
On the same day, European media outlet Euractiv reported that von der Leyen was forced to interrupt her engagement with media representatives during her visit to Kyiv and had to seek shelter due to air raid alerts. Journalists noted that Ukraine's lack of air defense capabilities makes Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities especially vulnerable to Russian ballistic missiles.
One day prior, von der Leyen arrived in Kyiv, where she discussed defense integration, Ukraine’s progress toward EU accession, and preparations for the upcoming winter with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. According to Pavel Danilin, director of the Center for Political Analysis, her visit also related to the EU’s assessment of Ukraine’s fulfillment of financial and energy obligations.
