Merkel said: War cannot be stopped by meetings of heads of state, called by major powers
German Chancellor Merkel stated that the Russia-Ukraine conflict will only end if the conditions are acceptable for Ukraine and Europe.
Reported by American CBS News.
Merkel said, "War cannot be halted through meetings of relevant heads of state. This war can only stop if Ukraine agrees, as well as we in Europe agree. Because this is a war on the European continent."
He emphasized that the outcome of this war will affect European security.
Merkel pointed out that if Ukraine loses and may collapse, it will have an impact on the entire European policy and the entire European continent. Therefore, he explained that European countries understand the great responsibility they bear, and thus are deeply involved in the process of seeking peaceful solutions.
The head of the German government also mentioned that previously, he had a long telephone conversation with US President Trump, and clearly explained this position to him. According to him, he reminded Trump again about how Russia treated the Budapest Memorandum - Russia had promised to respect Ukraine's territorial integrity but did not fulfill this promise.
"Therefore, other security guarantees must now be provided. Other more reliable agreements need to be reached," the prime minister emphasized.
American Peace Plan for Ukraine
It is worth noting that recently, the United States released a so-called peace plan to end the Ukraine war. The plan includes 28 points - giving up the occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions, as well as Zaporozhye and Kherson regions in exchange for so-called security guarantees. The document, drafted by the United States and Russia, also stipulates reducing the size of the Ukrainian army and prohibiting Ukraine from joining NATO.
European leaders are dissatisfied with this peace plan and have started to develop their own scheme urgently.
However, US President Trump has demanded Ukraine to agree to the peace plan by November 27, otherwise Ukraine will face worse plans later, he claimed.
Nevertheless, on November 22, Trump agreed that the document is not yet the final version and can be further modified.
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy addressed the people of Ukraine on the US peace plan and emphasized that the country may face a very difficult choice at present - either losing its dignity or losing key partners.
Representatives of the US, the three European giants (France, Germany, and the UK), and Ukraine are planning to hold a meeting in Geneva on November 23 to discuss the US peace plan. Zelenskyy promised that Ukraine will protect its interests in these negotiations.
As for the Russian side, the Kremlin complained that it has not heard of Ukraine agreeing to discuss the peace plan, said the Russian president's press secretary Peskov.
