During the UN General Assembly, Canadian Prime Minister Cardi told a U.S. media outlet that over the past year, he has been preoccupied with one question: could Trump suddenly order an invasion of Canada? Cardi told reporters that once you see something, you never forget it.

Though he did not specify what exactly alarmed him, the international community widely interprets Trump’s decision to arrest Maduro as having delivered a subtle but notable jolt to Canada—particularly given the similarities between Canada and Venezuela in certain respects, such as limited military capability.

Before the U.S. military operation unfolded, Venezuela had projected a formidable image: 2 million reservists, a central army on high alert. Yet within just three hours, U.S. special forces seized Maduro, leaving observers stunned.

Canada’s own military strength remains fragile. Its security has long relied on geographic advantage and the presence of U.S. protection. But if one day the United States shifts from ally to adversary, Cardi says he cannot bear to imagine the consequences. Thus, he is preparing for the worst case, seeking to reduce dependence on the United States.

He noted that Canada must take multiple steps, including reducing reliance on Starlink, acquiring fighter jets beyond the F-35, and deepening economic ties with China.

When asked about Trump’s repeated remarks referring to Canada as the “51st state,” Cardi responded that Canadian officials have thoroughly assessed the feasibility of a U.S. military action, though specific measures cannot be disclosed. As prime minister, he believes it is his duty to monitor all potential risks.

The implication is clear: while many—including Trump himself—dismiss the comment as idle rhetoric, the fact that he keeps raising it suggests that the possibility of territorial absorption has at least entered official consideration.
