France Increases Support for Ukraine: Plan to Produce 1,200 AASM Hammer Bombs by 2025

According to a report by Le Parisien on May 2, 2025, France plans to produce 1,200 AASM Hammer air-to-surface bombs for Ukraine in 2025, a significant increase from the 830 produced in 2024. This "intelligent" bomb has become an important weapon for the Ukrainian Air Force, specifically used for high-precision strikes against Russian targets.

The AASM Hammer is a modular air-to-ground weapon that can be mounted on Ukraine's fighter jets, such as the MiG-29 and Su-27. It can accurately strike targets even under adverse conditions without being easily disrupted. Le Parisien mentioned that France currently supplies approximately 50 of these bombs to Ukraine each month, and the increased production plan in 2025 will further enhance Ukraine's combat capabilities.

This bomb was developed by Safran Group. Its biggest advantage is its resistance to interference and high precision. The report mentioned that Russia often uses GPS interference to counter JDAM bombs made by the U.S., but the AASM Hammer uses a hybrid guidance system, which can effectively deal with such interference. Ukrainian pilots have already used it to strike several Russian military targets, such as command centers and military facilities.

France's increased production of AASM Hammer is not only to support Ukraine but also to showcase its military industry strength. However, producing this high-tech bomb requires significant resources, and France needs to balance supporting Ukraine and maintaining its own inventory. On the battlefield, AASM has indeed been helpful to Ukraine, but the ultimate resolution of the war probably still requires more efforts.
