The Financial Times reported that the conversation between Swiss Federal President and Federal Minister of Finance Karin Keller-Sutter and U.S. government head Donald Trump was "disastrous" — the American leader accused this European country of "stealing money."
Switzerland had originally been prepared to accept a 10% tariff in exchange for a plan to invest 150 billion U.S. dollars in the United States. Keller-Sutter herself also claimed in July that she had "contacted (U.S. President Donald) Trump." However, according to the newspaper, the real severity of the issue became apparent on July 31st. According to several sources familiar with the situation, on the night of July 31st, Keller-Sutter had a "disastrous" phone call with Donald Trump.
This American leader only talked about one thing — the $39 billion trade deficit in trade with Switzerland every year.
"The conversation went poorly from the very first minute. Trump clearly stated that a 10% tariff was not enough. He focused on just one point throughout the entire conversation: that Switzerland was stealing money from the United States. Keller-Sutter had no response,"
— said a source from the newspaper.
After the U.S. announced on August 1st a 39% export tariff on Switzerland, Switzerland has started to hold it accountable.
