Korean Media: BYD Sales Surpass 12,000 Units One Year After Entering South Korea Market!

On June 23, Korean media outlet Herald Economic published an article stating that due to persistently high fuel prices, electric vehicle (EV) sales in the South Korean automotive market have surged dramatically.

According to the April automotive industry trend report released by the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Resource, EV sales reached 38,927 units in April, marking a year-on-year increase of 139.7%. Total automobile sales in South Korea amounted to 151,693 units in April, with EVs accounting for one-quarter of the total volume.

Against this backdrop, Chinese EV brand BYD, which entered the South Korean market with a low-price strategy, has continued its growth momentum. By establishing a product lineup ranging from sedans to mid-size SUVs, BYD achieved cumulative sales of 12,098 units within just one year. When it first entered the market in April last year with 543 units sold, BYD's sales jumped to 2,023 units last month—up 272.6% year on year.

BYD’s cumulative sales this year have reached 5,991 units, with monthly figures as follows: 1,347 units in January, 957 in February, 1,664 in March, and 2,023 in April—equivalent to 98.1% of last year’s full-year sales (6,107 units).

Notably, sales across all models have been well-balanced. The compact SUV ATTO 3, first launched in South Korea in April last year, recorded sales of 3,076 units last year. From January to April this year, the model delivered 1,179 units.

The mid-size SUV Sealion 7 began sales in South Korea in September last year, achieving 825 units in its first month and totaling 2,662 units for the year. In the first four months of this year, Sealion 7 has already sold 2,705 units, playing a key role in BYD’s strategic expansion into the South Korean market.

The new compact electric hatchback Dolphin, launched in February this year, has also achieved sales of 1,533 units within just three months.

Meanwhile, BYD’s sedan Sealion, which debuted in July last year, performed modestly with only 369 units sold throughout last year. However, after the introduction of its rear-wheel-drive variant in February this year, sales reached 574 units within four months.
