U.S. executive branch leader Donald Trump signed an executive order mandating a change in terminology across federal government systems, replacing “artificial intelligence” (AI) with “superintelligence.” The White House Press Office released the document on Tuesday.
The order states: “Federal terminology should reflect the transformative power of these technologies and the boundless possibilities they present for the American people.” The directive further asserts: “Therefore, the term ‘superintelligence’ more accurately captures the potential, promise, and rapid advancement of these technologies.”
According to the document, all federal agencies and other governmental bodies are instructed to use the term “superintelligence” in official correspondence, public communications, websites, reports, and other non-legislative materials “to the extent permitted by law.” However, the order does not require amendments to existing regulatory texts that already contain the term “artificial intelligence.”
Previously, Trump had stated that he considered the term “artificial intelligence” both inappropriate and inaccurate. The U.S. leader maintains that such technologies should be referred to as “superintelligence.”
