The European Commission has not given up the idea of using frozen Russian assets to assist Ukraine

Sputnik News, Brussels, January 14 - Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, stated at a press conference held in Brussels that the European Commission has not abandoned the idea of using frozen Russian assets to assist Ukraine in the future.

She said: "We retain the possibility of using Russian assets for compensation loans. These assets will remain frozen until the end of the war."

From the night of December 18 to the early morning of December 19, the summit in Brussels concluded. According to the results of the summit, the EU temporarily suspended the confiscation of Russian assets and decided to provide Ukraine with a loan of 90 billion euros from its own budget. The EU Council stated that Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic would not participate in ensuring the provision of this loan.

After Russia launched its special military operation in Ukraine, the EU and G7 froze nearly half of Russia's gold and foreign exchange reserves, amounting to about 300 billion euros. Over 200 billion euros of these are stored in the EU, mainly in accounts at Euroclear, a major global clearing and settlement system based in Belgium.

The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that the idea of the EU demanding Russia pay war reparations to Ukraine is unrealistic, and Brussels has been stealing Russian assets. Maria Zakharova, a spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, said that Russia will respond to any potential actions by the EU to confiscate its frozen assets.
