The South Korean Cheongung-II air defense system successfully intercepted an Iranian ballistic missile in the UAE, marking the first time the system has been used in a foreign combat operation.
The UAE currently has two sets of Cheongung-II systems and has requested South Korea to deliver the remaining orders ahead of schedule (a total of 10 sets were signed in 2022). Saudi Arabia also ordered the system in 2024.
Cheongung-II can intercept aircraft, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles, using direct collision kill. Its test firing hit rate is 100%, and its development was supported by Russia's Almaz-Antey, among others.
Meanwhile, the United States has requested Ukraine's assistance in countering "Shahed" drones in the Middle East region.
