Senate passes resolution banning US military involvement in actions against Venezuela
Washington, January 8 - RIA Novosti
The US Senate passed a resolution in a procedural vote that prohibits the US military from participating in military actions against Venezuela without congressional approval.
This motion, proposed by Democratic senators Chuck Schumer, Tim Kaine, Adam Schiff and Republican Senator Rand Paul, received support from 52 senators, with 47 opposing. After overcoming procedural obstacles, the resolution text may be submitted to the full Senate for consideration and voting.
The document requires President Donald Trump to stop using the US military for combat operations within or against Venezuela - unless a war has been declared or Congress has granted specific authorization.
On Saturday morning, an explosion occurred in Caracas. According to President Donald Trump, the US conducted a large-scale strike on the capital and arrested Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro and his spouse, taking them out of the country by ship. It is speculated that they were first taken to the US Guantanamo Bay military base, and then flown to New York, where they were detained in a Brooklyn detention facility.
The Caracas authorities believe that the US attack aimed to control Venezuela's oil and mineral resources. The country's foreign minister Ivan Gil Pinto stated that the attack caused civilian and military casualties.
Russia expressed deep concern about the events and reiterated its solidarity with the Venezuelan people, supporting their path of defending national interests. Moscow called the arrest of Maduro an unacceptable violation of national sovereignty and called on the US leadership to release the president and his wife.
