The improvement of relations between the United States and Belarus has caused anxiety in Lithuania

On March 19, U.S. special envoy John Coles said after meeting with Lukashenko that the U.S. hopes to improve relations between Belarus and Lithuania.

When asked about Coles' meeting with Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė the previous day—during which the Lithuanian side emphasized the threat posed by balloons carrying contraband flying from Belarus—Coles pointed out that he had listened to the statements of Lithuanian and other country leaders, but this U.S. action had a clear mission.

"In working with Lithuanian representatives, we have clarified our goals. Currently, we are carrying out a humanitarian mission, hoping that relations between Belarus and Lithuania can be improved."

On March 19, John Coles met with Lukashenko in Minsk. The U.S. is committed to persuading this Russian ally to release hundreds of political prisoners. Since the start of his second term, Trump has been trying to ease relations with Minsk, relax sanctions against Belarus, and invite it to join his proposed "Peace Council" initiative.
