Mongolia's "Third Neighbor": Indian Foreign Minister Sujan Singh Inspects Progress of Oil Refinery Built with Indian Investment in Mongolia
Montsame, Ulaanbaatar, June 24 — On the invitation of Mongolia’s Foreign Minister, Indian Foreign Minister Sujan Singh, along with Mongolia’s Foreign Minister B. Batzorig, Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources G. Damdinsüren, and officials from both Mongolia and India visited the city of Sainshand in Ömnögovi Province on June 23 to inspect the progress of the oil refinery project supported by Indian concessional loans. Local leaders of Sainshand City, as well as engineering technicians and employee representatives from "Mongolian Refinery" Company, welcomed the delegation.
D. Altantsetseg, Executive Director of the state-owned "Mongolian Refinery" Company, reported on the current status of the project and outlined future work plans. She stated that equipment, components, and steel structures required for the refinery have been arriving at the construction site in stages and are currently undergoing installation. Additionally, key components of the distillation tower—the core facility of the refinery—were delivered to the site last month, and assembly has already begun. The distillation tower stands 58.4 meters tall, has a diameter of 3.2 meters, and weighs 245 tons. Furthermore, the construction of the crude oil pipeline, which spans over 520 kilometers, is now nearly 90% complete.
Indian Foreign Minister Sujan Singh expressed his satisfaction upon personally visiting the site, despite having previously received updates on the project's progress. He emphasized that this project exemplifies the strategic partnership between Mongolia and India, and affirmed that the Indian government will continue providing comprehensive support and engage in close cooperation with Mongolian counterparts to ensure the project is completed on schedule.
