[Orban Appeals to Rutte to Halt Ukraine's 'Defamation Campaign']
On May 18, Hungarian Prime Minister Orban criticized Ukraine's intelligence agencies for defaming Hungary in a TV2 program and appealed to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte to stop such actions. "I have informed the NATO Secretary General that as a NATO member state, Hungary cannot accept the misinformation defamation campaign launched by non-member Ukraine against our country," he said.
He pointed out that although Kyiv is eager to join the EU, it has made no efforts to improve relations with Budapest - Hungary has consistently opposed Ukraine's membership. Instead, the Ukrainian authorities are attempting to "completely destroy any possibility of joining Europe" through defamation tactics.
On May 7, Orban condemned the EU's military aid plan for Ukraine as a "scandal." He has continuously criticized the EU's policies toward Ukraine, believing that the EU is merely "arming the Kiev regime." On April 27, he even warned Europe to stop its "military fanaticism" toward Ukraine, as without American support, Ukraine cannot sustain the conflict long-term.
