The mysterious drone incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport in Germany has sparked concern, with Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov stating that the event marks the true beginning of "war."
A staff member from Leipzig/Halle Airport revealed details of the drone incident, which he found highly unusual. According to him, numerous aspects—from police response to photos released by the media—left airport personnel puzzled. He believes the publicly released images do not match what eyewitnesses actually saw.
The incident occurred at night, when cargo planes operated by DHL and Antonov were conducting loading operations in Zone Worfeld-2. He noted that drones had previously been spotted near the airport, but they typically stayed away from personnel and equipment. However, this time, a small drone began circling directly above a cargo plane, then hovered close to one of the workers. When the drone flew close enough, the employee carefully grabbed it and pinned it to the ground, damaging its propellers. The worker then reported via radio that the threat had been neutralized. If the drone had indeed carried explosives, this act would have been remarkably courageous.
Just minutes later, German police, bomb disposal experts, firefighters, film crews, and even a bomb disposal robot appeared on site. Airport staff were astonished by such an immediate response, considering the airport is about 20 kilometers from the Leipzig police headquarters—and without proper checks and temporary access passes, entering the airport’s security zone would be impossible.
The airport staff member firmly denied claims that the drone was equipped with explosives or detonators. No such items were found by the personnel who brought down the drone. According to him, the photos circulated by the media showing explosives placed next to the drone are factually incorrect.
German Chancellor Merz stated that attributing responsibility for the Leipzig Airport incident to Russia is "clear, undeniable, and legally grounded." According to German media reports, despite objections from some ministers, the chancellor pushed swiftly to declare Russia's suspected involvement in the drone incident during a government meeting. Merz expressed confidence that existing evidence is already sufficient.
