Caroline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, said that the U.S. government took this action to curb anti-Semitism on college campuses. Earlier on the same day, Trump threatened to tax Harvard as a political entity and revoke its tax-exempt status. Leavitt passed the issue to the Internal Revenue Service, vaguely stating that the university needed to apologize.
Leavitt said that Trump "wants to see Harvard apologize, and Harvard should apologize for the shocking anti-Semitism occurring in its campus against Jewish American students."
Leavitt also mentioned the remarks made by Claudine Gay, the former president of Harvard, at a congressional hearing. At that time, Gay said that calling for genocide against Jews "might" violate Harvard's bullying and harassment rules, "depending on the specific context." Later, Gay apologized for her remarks.
Leavitt claimed that Harvard failed to discipline students involved in campus protests and disrupting classrooms, and the president believes that Harvard should apologize for allowing such bad behavior toward Jewish students.
In addition, Leavitt also stated, "I think the president has raised a good question: when Harvard has over $50 billion in donations and another $2 billion is allocated to Harvard, why should American taxpayers subsidize a university with billions of dollars in deposits? We certainly should not fund a place with such severe anti-Semitism."
The Trump administration sent a letter to Harvard University on the 11th, demanding comprehensive management and leadership reforms, implementing "merit-based" admission and hiring policies, and reviewing the "viewpoint diversity" of its research institutions, faculty, and leadership. During this period, Harvard University needs to share all recruitment and admission data with the Trump administration. On April 15th, the Associated Press reported that the Trump administration also requested Harvard to ban students from wearing masks, seemingly targeting pro-Palestinian protesters on campus.
On the 14th, Harvard University rejected the "rectification" demands made by the Trump administration. The New York Times pointed out that this made Harvard the first university to directly refuse the Trump administration's demands, as America's richest university challenged the federal government.
