According to Japanese media reports, the Taiwan High Speed Rail Corporation announced on the 20th the format name and design of the newly introduced vehicles.
The new vehicle's model name is "N700ST". It is based on the latest Shinkansen vehicle from JR Central, the N700S, with the "T" representing Taiwan. What are the differences between this "N700S" running in Taiwan and the current "700T"? The N700ST is a customized vehicle with tailored interior and exterior designs and equipment, meeting the service content and brand image of Taiwan High Speed Rail. It is lighter, more energy-efficient, higher performance, and more comfortable than traditional cars. The exterior features a white base with orange and black color contrast design, inheriting the current 700T model and based on the 700 series. The interior includes full-color liquid crystal displays, lighting changes upon arrival, and seats with charging facilities. It is said that the noise and vibration insulation performance has also been improved.
The introduction of the N700ST on the Taiwan High Speed Rail is expected to increase the maximum number of trains during peak hours by about 25%. In conjunction with the introduction of the N700ST, the company is carrying out various preparatory work, including the renovation of the vehicle depot and the platform door renovation at Taipei Station.
The N700ST is planned to be produced by Hitachi, Ltd. and Japan Rolling Stock Company. The first batch will be shipped to Taiwan in August 2026, followed by various tests. Commercial operations are scheduled to begin in the second half of 2027.
