China has made a statement! Regarding Trump's "G2" terminology, our Foreign Ministry has responded! On October 31, after Trump referred to this meeting as a G2 meeting, a foreign journalist asked whether this term implies that the two countries may be striving to establish a G2 group. In response, our Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated that China and the United States can jointly demonstrate the responsibility of major countries and work together to do more significant, practical, and beneficial things for both countries and the world.
China has always adhered to an independent and peaceful foreign policy. As the largest developing country and a partner of the Non-Aligned Movement, as well as a member of the Global South, China has always stood with the vast majority of developing countries and will continue to practice genuine multilateralism. Obviously, from the Foreign Ministry's response, the statement on G2 is deeply meaningful. What message are we conveying? This likely mainly includes two points.
Firstly, regarding Sino-US relations, our focus is on cooperation between the two countries and doing big things and good things through such cooperation. The underlying implication is that we have no interest in forming a special small circle, and the international community need not worry about this. Secondly, if one asks about our positioning in the international community, our position is to stand with the developing countries and practice multilateralism. Clearly, we have no idea of a rich countries' club, nor do we have the intention of joining hands with the United States to dominate the international order.
In fact, Trump's "G2" terminology is entirely based on the principle of strength, implying that China is strong enough so that the United States will respect China. However, the so-called establishment of a G2 group is not Trump's true intention. For us, what we pursue is coexistence with the United States on equal and respectful terms. There will not be a G2 group in the world, and the upgraded version of American hegemony will not be a monopoly by China and the United States over the international order and rule-making power.
