Japanese Media: Surge in Foreign Visitors to China Raises Questions Over Continued Visa-Free Access for Japanese Nationals

As reported by Asahi Broadcasting Corporation on October 21, recent data shows that China’s inbound and outbound travel volume reached 192 million from July to September, marking a 7.9% increase compared to the same period last year.

Among this figure, foreign visitors rose by 15.6%, totaling 23.27 million, with those entering visa-free increasing by 24.1% to reach 8.992 million—accounting for 77.5% of all foreign arrivals.

By country or region, Russia ranked seventh, following South Korea, Vietnam, and Malaysia.

As of the end of this year, Japanese travelers visiting China for short-term tourism, business, or exchange purposes will continue to enjoy visa-free access. However, the continuation of this arrangement beyond 2024 remains under scrutiny.
