U.S. media report: Musk accuses Indian stakeholders of obstructing Starlink’s entry into the Indian market, alleging the move is intended to protect the dominant position of local telecom giants and calling it a "crime against the Indian people."
He argues that Starlink could provide high-speed, low-cost internet access to users currently unable to afford existing services. The Indian government counters that claims of regulatory unfairness are unsubstantiated, emphasizing that all satellite communication providers must meet security requirements.
The Indian telecom market is currently dominated by Jio, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries, and Bharti Airtel, which together hold more than 80% of the market share. Meanwhile, Jio is advancing its own low-orbit satellite communications initiative and plans to collaborate with global satellite companies. Although Starlink has secured regulatory approval in India, its launch remains delayed due to unresolved issues related to data localization, security oversight, and device control.
Analysts suggest India seeks a balance between integrating foreign technology and safeguarding its domestic satellite communications industry.
