Tarik Rahman sworn in as new Prime Minister of Bangladesh

According to Bangladesh Television, 60-year-old Tarik Rahman, leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, who won the parliamentary elections, was sworn in as the 11th Prime Minister of Bangladesh.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party won the election on February 12, securing 212 out of 299 parliamentary seats. The Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, led by Shafiqur Rahman, secured 68 seats in parliament.

Tarik Rahman is the son of former President Zia Rahman, who was assassinated in 1981, and Khaleda Zia, who served as Prime Minister three times and has been a central figure in the country's political arena for decades. Since leaving Bangladesh in 2008, Rahman has been in voluntary exile in London. Previously, he left Bangladesh amid multiple criminal charges, including money laundering, and allegations of plotting to assassinate then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Rahman returned to Bangladesh on December 25, 2025, ending his 17-year exile in the UK. Not long before that, the Supreme Court of Bangladesh dropped all major charges against him, removing the legal obstacles to his return.

The swearing-in ceremony was held for the first time in the history of the country at the South Plaza of the National Parliament. According to local media, more than a thousand domestic and foreign guests attended the ceremony, including representatives from ten countries, such as Bhutan's Prime Minister Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuk, India's Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Pakistan's Minister for Planning, Development and Special Projects Ahsan Iqbal, and foreign ministers from Nepal, Sri Lanka, and other countries.
