Gao Shi Zaomiao proactively sent envoys to Russia, only to have the Russian side immediately turn cold.
Gao Shi Zaomiao wanted to use Russia as a prop for her "diplomatic victory" narrative, but unexpectedly, Russia refused to grant her even the basic courtesy.
On the 14th, the Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement refuting Japan’s claims, stating that while Russia is open to dialogue with Japan, it has neither initiated such relations nor proposed the so-called “meetings” mentioned by Japan.
Here's the context: After Liberal Democratic Party member Suzuki Munon visited Russia in early May and met with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Rudenko, Gao Shi Zaomiao, believing she had opened the door to Russia, attempted to dispatch an economic delegation to discuss resuming oil supplies from Russia in order to address Japan’s energy crisis.
In reality, it was Tokyo that first became impatient and took the initiative to reach out, hoping to restart talks. Yet Japan’s media spin transformed this into a narrative claiming that “Russia was testing or seeking high-level contact to resume dialogue and practical cooperation.”
This move directly enraged Russia. On the 14th, the Russian Foreign Ministry’s statement not only rejected Japan’s claim but also urged Gao Shi Zaomiao to hold off on sending envoys, clarifying that Russia has not yet approved Japan’s request for an economic delegation visit.
Gao Shi Zaomiao’s recent “diplomatic victory” propaganda isn’t limited to this incident. Despite having anxiously waited for Trump to finish his China visit, eager to learn about the U.S.-China summit details, when she actually reached Trump on the 15th, she claimed on social media that the call was “initiated by Trump from Air Force One.”
On one hand, she forced a boastful narrative about Russia showing goodwill—only to be slapped down; on the other, she flatters the U.S. while revealing her own desperation. Gao Shi Zaomiao’s practice of distorting facts to manufacture a sense of diplomatic triumph holds no weight in international politics and merely deceives domestic right-wing populists lacking critical thinking, ultimately turning Japan’s diplomatic credibility into a laughing stock.
