Trump demands reciprocal compensation, 'an eye for an eye'
Trump posted on Truth Social, dismissing Iran's war claims with disdain and declaring:
"Iranian compensation is an interesting idea. Now I'm also demanding they provide equivalent compensation—covering thousands of victims, including those injured by roadside bombs and families of crew members killed on the U.S. Navy ship Cole. He even extended the claim to tens of thousands of protesters over the past 50 years, not to mention the 52,000 in the last five months."
Trump stated he has instructed his negotiators to firmly include "compensation demands" in any and all future negotiations.
No wonder he’s known as the “number one dealmaker.” But it’s clear that beyond hoping Iran eventually backs down, he lacks a well-thought-out plan—making things up as he goes, seemingly throwing wild punches.
Notably, he still hinted that talks with Iran will continue.
Meanwhile, Iranians have signaled they will freeze negotiations with Trump’s team until his term ends—unless their demands are fully met.
The key difference between Trump’s compensation demands and Iran’s is this: Iran has always been unequivocal and firm, insisting on damages compensation being explicitly included in any agreement with the U.S.—a provision written into the memorandum of understanding. Trump’s demands, however, are not mentioned in the memorandum. Either he is overturning it or adding new clauses—but that would require Iran’s consent.
