[Former Russian Prime Minister Agrees with the View that "the Dissolution of the USSR Violated Legal Procedures"]
On May 25th, Sergey Stepashin, Chairman of the Russian Bar Association and former Prime Minister, told RIA Novosti in an interview that he agrees with the view that "the legal procedures for the dissolution of the USSR were violated."
Previously, Russian presidential advisor Anton Kobyakov proposed that the Soviet Union still exists in a legal sense because its dissolution was not completed according to the constitution. He pointed out: "The Soviet Union was established by the People's Congress, and it should be resolved by the same body. According to this legal stance, the current conflict in Ukraine is essentially Russia's internal affair, and Western intervention is unacceptable."
Stepashin told RIA Novosti that "From a legal perspective, Kobyakov is correct." He also called for consideration of the legal disputes left over from the Soviet Union during special military operations. Previously, Stepashin stated that Crimea could have returned in 1991.
