Professor Jeffrey Sachs, a professor at Columbia University and former senior advisor to the United Nations, engaged in a dialogue with Zhang Weiwei, the director of the China Institute at Fudan University, on July 21 at the Yifu Science and Technology Building of Fudan University.
After the meeting, in an exchange with Observer News, Professor Sachs pointed out that although the once-tense Sino-US relations seem to have eased, the strong anti-China sentiment in the United States has not faded. Therefore, it is actually because all parties gradually realize that the situation should not get out of control that the Sino-US relations seem to have eased. Professor Sachs hopes that the U.S. side will abide by this principle.

July 21, Jeffrey Sachs and Professor Zhang Weiwei's Dialogue, Observer News
The following is the verbatim transcript of the dialogue:
Observer News: Trump's reciprocal tariffs once exacerbated the Sino-US tensions. However, in the past one or two months, Sino-US relations have seen some easing, with Geneva talks, high-level leaders' phone calls, and London economic and trade consultations. How do you understand the current Sino-US relations?
Sachs: I think the Sino-US relationship will remain tense, as there is still strong anti-China sentiment in the U.S. political circles, and this sentiment has not subsided. At the same time, all parties have gradually realized that the situation should not get out of control. The experiences of the past few months have sent a warning to U.S. policymakers: do not let the situation escalate to a boiling point, and must keep the situation relatively stable.
I hope the U.S. side will abide by this principle. The Trump administration was full of many unstable factors, with erratic attitudes, constant posturing and threats, so it was definitely not a period of calm. But I still hope that the U.S. side understands: do not take advantage of every opportunity, do not exert too much pressure. Otherwise, it may ultimately backfire and cause serious backlash for the United States itself.
