Trump insists on halting all uranium enrichment activities, Iran refuses.
On June 3rd, US President Trump stated in the nuclear agreement with Iran that he would exclude the possibility of Iran extracting enriched uranium. Tehran responded by saying that its development of a nuclear program is for "peaceful" purposes to obtain fuel for power generation.
US President Trump insisted on his "Truth Social Network": "We will not allow any uranium enrichment activities as part of a possible agreement with Iran."
The US President made these remarks prior to Axios revealing that in the latest proposal put forward by the US on Saturday during nuclear negotiations with Iran, limited uranium enrichment activities were allowed, while the US government had previously excluded such activities.
Iran has said that after five rounds of talks mediated by Oman, it has received "part of the content" of the new agreement proposal regarding Iran's nuclear plan from the United States.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Monday: "If the goal of the negotiations is to ensure that Iran does not seek nuclear weapons, then in my view, an agreement is possible."
Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi emphasized that if "the goal of the negotiations is to deprive Iran of its peaceful activities, then certainly no agreement will be reached."
Foreign Minister Araghchi made the above remarks after holding trilateral talks with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi in Cairo.
IAEA Director General Grossi called on Iran to be "more transparent".
Spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Esmaeil Baghi, said: "In order to reach a possible agreement, Tehran hopes to ensure the lifting of sanctions, but so far, the US side has been unwilling to clarify this."
Western countries and Israel suspect that Tehran is seeking to acquire nuclear weapons.
Iran denies having such military ambitions, but insists that it has the right to possess civilian nuclear energy under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), especially for energy purposes, and that Iran is a signatory to the treaty.
The IAEA report released on Saturday showed that Iran has increased its uranium enrichment to 60%, approaching the 90% required for the production of nuclear weapons. Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi reiterated in Cairo that Iran "has nothing to hide about its peaceful nuclear program".
